‘They Saved My Life,’ Cumberland County Man Says of Vickie’s Angels
After being diagnosed with stomach cancer last year, Scott Noll, a longtime truck driver, found himself on a different kind of road than he was accustomed to. Forced to stop working, his immediate financial security was in doubt. As he navigated the process for claiming disability benefits and securing short-term help from his family, the social worker he connected with at Andrews Patel Hematology/Oncology suggested he contact Vickie’s Angel Foundation.
Sure enough, the foundation came through and helped Noll cover his rent and utility bills. The short-term financial bridge touched Noll so deeply that he said he recently sent Vickie’s Angel Foundation a thank you card and a donation. He wanted to play a part in helping someone else in need who is suffering from a cancer diagnosis.
“I wouldn’t have known what to do,” Noll said of the thoughts that were running through his head before he connected with Vickie’s Angel Foundation. “Basically, they saved my life — or extended it.”
Noll, 53, a resident of Mount Holly Springs in Cumberland County, said his diagnosis followed a period of intense stomach pain. He said he had a hard time eating and found himself nauseous frequently, which were signs that something was wrong.
He said that his doctor diagnosed his cancer as Stage IV, meaning there is no cure for him. But he said his doctor also called him a “miracle” and said that he’s handled his treatment well.
During a recent interview, Noll said that his hair is growing back now that he’s finished a round of chemotherapy. He’s hopeful that he might be able to take a deep-sea fishing trip later this year, although that potential plan is still up in the air depending on his health and guidance from his doctor.
In the meantime, he said he’s grateful for the people involved with Vickie’s Angel Foundation. He specifically mentioned the assistance he received helped him keep paying for his car insurance. That was a critical thing he needed as he went through his treatment.
“I really needed that to drive so that I could get my chemo,” Noll said. “They’re good people.”
