After being diagnosed with mouth cancer earlier this winter, Dale Blosser was in a real bind. In order for his radiation and infusion treatments to begin, he needed to find a new dentist to remove many of his teeth. The problem, he said, was that most were not accepting new patients due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, the people at Pink Hands of Hope, a Mechanicsburg-area charity that typically aids local women battling breast cancer, suggested that Dale reach out to Vickie’s Angel Foundation for help. Within days of making contact, Vickie’s Angel Foundation arranged an appointment for Dale at Capozzi Dental in Etters. That’s where the 66-year-old Mechanicsburg man had several of his teeth extracted, allowing him to begin his cancer treatments at the Hershey Medical Center.

“They took all my teeth out that needed it and treated me like a king,” Dale said of his experience at Capozzi Dental, which covered the cost of his dental work. “Before that, I didn’t know what I was doing. I was climbing the walls not knowing what to do.”

Prior to this recent experience, Dale, a retired tractor-trailer driver, said that he endured years of uncertainty where he was constantly battling mouth pain. As a patient with emphysema, Dale said a doctor initially diagnosed him with oral thrush, a condition that was thought to have been caused by the inhalers that Dale used to treat his emphysema. But none of the treatments he received relieved his pain.

That’s why a recent trip to Hershey Medical Center, where he was referred to a mouth specialist, was a positive development. Even though he learned he had cancer, Dale said there was finally some clarity on treatment and a path forward.

Connecting with the people at Vickie’s Angel Foundation was also another blessing, according to Dale. He said the people with the foundation, including founder Mickey Minnich, “saved his life” and helped to put him in a position where he is feeling much better. Even though he said he recently endured a heart attack that required a hospitalization where he received three stents in his heart, Dale said he’s grateful.

“This was really beyond what I ever expected,” Dale said of his experience with Vickie’s Angel Foundation. “I feel like I have a future.”
